Large-Scale Fluctuating Hydrogen Production Technology Powers Commissioning of the World’s Largest Green Methanol Project

News Center2026-09-10

On September 10, the first batch of green methanol from Goldwind’s 1.45-million-tonne green methanol project in Hinggan League was officially shipped. This marks the full engineering validation and industrial realization of the world-first full-industry-chain technical route integrating wind-to-hydrogen coupled with biomass gasification for methanol production. The project has further entered the phase of large-scale commercial operation, signifying that China’s green liquid fuel industry has stepped into a new era of large-scale and market-oriented development.

As a critical upstream segment for green methanol production, the project’s first green hydrogen plant has been put into operation. The initial 160 MW large-scale fluctuating hydrogen production system supplied by HydoTech is running stably and continuously delivering large-volume green hydrogen for green methanol manufacturing.

The project’s first commissioned hundred-megawatt green hydrogen production unit adopts HydoTech’s pioneering 160 MW large-scale fluctuating hydrogen production system, consisting of 32 square electrolyser systems. It has achieved cluster coordinated operation of the entire system under real fluctuating wind power conditions.

The system dynamically adjusts load in response to variations in wind power output, achieving 100% wind power integration and wind-following operation. Under low-load conditions, hydrogen content in oxygen remains no more than 0.3% at 10% load. Individual units can be isolated for maintenance while the rest automatically compensate output, enabling on-site maintenance without plant shutdown and continuous hydrogen supply across the facility. HydoTech has industrialized large-scale fluctuating wind-to-hydrogen technology to reliably support green methanol production. Subsequent batches of equipment will be commissioned in phases within this year as the project advances.

This operational capability is underpinned by HydoTech’s self-developed digital system HydoOS® AI. Integrated with multi-sensor data, the AI operation and management algorithm enables real-time perception and coordinated management of equipment status, system performance and renewable energy fluctuations, supporting unmanned and intelligent operation of the hydrogen production system.

Winds in Hinggan League are being transformed into green fuel for ocean-going vessels. On the commercial side, Goldwind has signed long-term green methanol supply agreements totalling over 750,000 tonnes with global leading shipping companies including Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. With the first shipment of green methanol, this industrial chain — from wind energy and green hydrogen to green fuels — has established tangible links to the global shipping market.

Leveraging fluctuating electrolysis hydrogen production technology and large-scale green hydrogen system engineering capabilities, HydoTech serves as a vital bridge connecting renewable energy and green fuel production. From green hydrogen to green fuels, HydoTech, together with global energy leaders, is reshaping energy production paradigms: shifting energy from extraction to manufacturing.
